The author writes in clear and jargon-free prose and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Western history. I read this simply for my own learning and it turned out to be an enjoyable read as well. It was exactly what I expected and quite good and useful. The author did a good job creating a useful, readable reference book.
The key to this book is under the title, "A Handbook. I enjoy reading about historical events. Although listed as a text. It is a summary of historical events. No insight is provided. If you just what a general idea of events, theen it is okay. I got this book for a college course that I am taking, book reports on western civilization.
I find it a great read and although it is by no means exhaustive how could it be???? it opens up the world of history and provides relevant bibliographies for those of us who want to learn more.
